News just broke that Bellator Champ Rafael Carvalho (14-1) will make his third defence of his Middleweight belt against gritty Italian Alessio Sakara (18-11) at the Mandela Forum in Florence, Italy in an end of year event to be held on the 9th of December and will be headlining the event known as Bellator 185. After two straight defences against Melvin Manhoef, Carvalho has a new challenge ahead.
Many people would have been shocked at the decision to not give their newest signing Gegard Mousasi the first shot at Carvalho but at least it gives him time to make steady progress within Bellator. One would imagine Mousasi would be involved in the next number one contender clash at Middleweight.
Carvalho has looked unstoppable in most of his pro bouts so far, and will look to continue the reign of fear heading into December. After losing his first ever pro bout in his career, he has gone on a tear T/KO’ing the majority of his opponents. Carvalho has generally been slower to get into fights but can snap in an instant finishing a fight just like that.
His opponent Alessio Sakara has had a mixed life in MMA so far. The former UFC Fighter had a decent spell with the promotion which contained 15 fights, before going on a four fight losing streak which eventually led to him getting dropped. Since his time in the UFC, Sakara has gone on 3-0 with an extra fight being a no contest. His three fight win streak 2 of which were in Bellator has lead him to this opportunity. Something that is strange about him getting the Middleweight title shot is that his previous three fights have been at light Heavyweight although before that he did fight at Middleweight. Another aggressive fighter, he’s finished his last three bouts never getting to the third with finishes in either the first or second round.
It should be a good contest, although not the fight most fans were anticipating it works well as it gives Mousasi time to embed himself into the Bellator way, and we should expect to see him fight for the title early 2018.
What are your thoughts on the bout?
